A day in the life of logistics operation apprentice, Declan Garrity.

The future of the Logistics Industry depends of youth, and bringing through the next generation of well-trained, highly skilled workers. That’s where Transport Training Academy plays its part: we train young apprentices and prepare them for a life in logistics – young apprentices like Declan Garrity. We endeavour to support them, and embed and promote equality and diversity and safeguarding in all our training.

Declan works for Davenport Transport Ltd, a Lancashire-based logistics company which provides ambient warehousing and distribution services to the food industry throughout the Midlands and North West of England. He’s been with the company for about a year, and has now embarked on his level 2 Logistics Operations apprenticeship.

Throughout the course of his training Declan will learn about mail and package distribution, warehousing and storage, import and export, driving goods, traffic office and transport departments. Declan’s most recent training has been on counter-balance forklift truck driving. How’s it all going? Well, here’s what he had to say.

How long have you had an interest in logistics?

“I suppose I’ve been really interested for about two years. My step father’s involved in the business, so I guess I’ve picked up some of my interest and enthusiasm from him.”

How long have you been working at Davenport Transport, and what made you want to study for a Logistic Operations apprenticeship?

“I’ve been there for about a year now, and I’ve managed to get some experience of the industry. So now I want to learn more and get a better understanding of what actually goes on in logistics. Hopefully studying for my level 2 apprenticeship will give me that knowledge and set me up well for a good career in the industry.”

You’re currently doing counter-balance forklift truck training at Academy House, Atherton: how’s the training going?

“It’s going well. I’ve actually just passed my test. I went through the training course and passed the test. I really enjoyed the training course and I’m really pleased that I passed the test. I’ve already done the manual handling part of the apprenticeship, and the next thing I’ll be learning about is warehousing and storage, but I’ll also be keeping up my maths and English studies at the same time.”

How have you enjoyed the apprenticeship training so far?

“It’s been really good. I’ve learnt a lot and enjoyed my time so far. I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I’m excited about it. The tutors and instructors at TTA have helped me a lot, and are prepared to give you extra help if you need it. I’m sure the rest of the training will be just as enjoyable.”
