If you have good teamwork between the Job Centre and skilled and experienced training providers like TTA then anything is possible.

TTA likes to bring you good news stories, and the story of Eoghan Dalton’s journey is truly remarkable. Eoghan signed on at the Atherton Job Centre and was looked after by Jenny Roscoe and a team of trained professionals. He arrived at the Job Centre nervous and severely lacking in confidence, but after receiving help from Atherton JCP and undertaking two Warehouse and Plant training courses at TTA, Eoghan’s future now looks very bright. Here’s Jenny’s account of Eoghan’s story and his 3-week journey to what will hopefully develop into full time employment in the next week or two.

“Eoghan Dalton is 20 years old and suffers from a range of health issues including Asperger’s. When he came for his first appointment at the Job Centre he was accompanied by his Nan. He was unable to deal with other people without her help and support. He told us that he would like to go on a course that might help in his efforts to find a job. The course that immediately sprang to my mind was the Logistics Qualifications Bundle courses run by Transport Training Academy.”

“I was initially unsure whether sending him on the course was the right decision because he was very timid and nervous, and I knew from my previous dealings with TTA that the training courses they run are excellent but also fast-moving and intensive. Eoghan was still very interested despite this so we agreed to send him to TTA to have a talk to Suzanne Ogilvie the company’s Training and Compliance Manager. I felt deep down that he might be overwhelmed when he met with Suzanne and saw what the course involved, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.”

“After having a long chat with Eoghan, Suzanne rang me and said he still seemed very keen on doing the Warehouse and Storage RQF Level 2 qualification. She explained to me that the qualification covered a number areas including : Health, Safety & Security at Work , develop effective working relationships with colleagues in a logistics operation, picking goods, wrapping and packing goods, moving and handling goods, stock control and operating equipment, as well as training towards a Level 2 FLT Operations award and certificates in manual handling and pallet truck operation.”

“I was very nervous because the course sounded intensive and I really didn’t want anything to dent his confidence, but we all agreed that he should start the course. After a few days Suzanne rang me and said he seemed perfectly happy and was laughing and joking with the team and his fellow learners and making great progress.”

“She said he got along well with everybody and there was nothing he wasn’t willing to do. The upshot was he passed the first course with flying colours. In fact, Eoghan enjoyed the course so much that he asked if he could also do another course – the DGV Bundle Qualification. We all agreed that it was a good thing for him to do, so we signed him up. Eoghan then passed this course too with flying colours. So naturally we were all delighted.”

“Since completing the logistics courses Eoghan has been back in to the Job Centre and I frankly couldn’t believe the change in him. He came in on his own and he was buzzing. He told me he loved every minute of his training courses and had learned a great deal. What’s more he was happy for his story to be shared with others. The increased levels of confidence in 3 weeks were truly amazing. What’s more Eoghan has since had an interview for a job with the Council and he’s very hopeful that he’ll be offered the job.”

“I think what Eoghan’s story shows is that if things are handled well and sympathetically then great things can definitely be achieved. A great deal of credit should go to Suzanne and TTA. If they hadn’t been able to handle the situation as well as they did, then the outcome could’ve been very different. I think at the end of the day Eoghan’s story demonstrates that when you have good teamwork between the Job Centre and skilled and experienced training providers like TTA then anything is possible.”
