I’m 47 years old and a woman; but neither of those two things should stop you trying to achieve your goals.

If you cast your minds back a few months, you may remember we brought you the story of Jayne Parkes. Jayne was given the opportunity to get vocational training at Transport Training Academy and jumped at the chance. She then breezed through her DGV training. After passing her test she vowed to come back at some stage and complete her class 2 training. Well, we’re pleased to say that not only did Jayne return as promised: she is now the proud owner of a Class 2 licence. Here’s what she thought of her experience.

What was the reason you decided to go back to Transport Training Academy to get your Class 2 licence?

“I did it so that I could progress in work and do my job better. TTA was the natural choice for me as I’d had such a great experience doing my driver training course. When I was training everyone had been so supportive and helpful, so there was never any question about me choosing to go anywhere else. There was also the added bonus that TTA’s headquarters is just around the corner from where I live!”

Did you find the Class 2 training more difficult and challenging than your initial DGV training?

“Oh definitely, I think maybe age has a lot to do with that, in that the older you get; the harder it is to do things. So, yes I did find it very taxing. The good thing is on the first day when I went out training with Julie [Instructor Julie Ann Kirkham] she reassured me that although I was obviously nervous she was certain I would be capable of doing the training and be test-ready at the end of the course. With her help I was able to overcome my nerves and I’m really grateful for her help and patience. I knew I had it in me to do it, but I don’t think that I could’ve managed it without all the help and support from all the staff at TTA and I mean all the staff.”

So would you say that age needn’t be a barrier if you’ve got drive and determination to change your life?

“Absolutely, I’m 47 years old and a woman, but neither of those two things should stop you trying to achieve your goals. I can obviously only speak for myself, but I would say if you’ve got the drive and willingness to go out and change your life, then go out and do it. There are opportunities out there for people in this industry [logistics] and people just have to go out there and grab them. If I’d known what I know now 20 years ago, I would’ve done this ages ago.”

What new opportunities will this new Class 2 licence qualification open up for you?

“The qualification will give me the opportunity to work on bigger trucks and rigids and work on 46, 50, 70 metre and 90 metre trucks. I’ll also be able to do more work on other aspects of the job at Height for Hire, the company who encouraged me and supported me to take the extra qualification. As far as I’m concerned Class 2 was just the start of my training. It was a big hurdle to get over at the time, but I’m eager to do more. The training has opened so many doors for me and I’m eager to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.”
