TTA Managing Director, David Coupe, grows a ‘mo’ for charity

Whilst most of us have spent November worrying about Christmas and other such trivialities, Transport Training Academy Managing Director, David Coupe, has spent his time growing a moustache for charity. He’s been supported in his challenge by Lee Stewart, TTA’s Head of Teaching, Learning and Quality, who’s been growing his chest hair to support David in ‘spirit’.

David is growing his ‘tache’ as part of the Movember movement – a fantastic charity that promotes health and wellbeing amongst men – and he hopes to donate any money he receives for growing his rather splendid –looking ‘mo’ to the Movember Foundation for testicular cancer. He’s not yet sure how much money he’ll have raised by the end of the month, but we’ll let you know when the figures are finally tallied.

Why is the Movember Foundation such an important charity? Well, it’s because it’s the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, all year round. The Movember Foundation is an independent charity that in the last 13 years has funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects worldwide. It addresses some of the biggest health issues facing men: health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

So what is the Movember Foundation aiming to achieve? Well, by encouraging men to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The stated aim of the charity is to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25 per cent by 2030, and that surely has to be a laudable ambition.

So where do the charitable donations go to? Well, Prostate Cancer UK is the main beneficiary of the UK’s Movember campaign. For the last ten years, the Movember Foundation has have significantly contributed to Prostate Cancer UK’s research initiatives and has supported men by investing in its services. Between 2012 and 2015 the Movember Foundation invested £21 million in Prostate Cancer UK research, the Movember Centres of Excellence and True NTH, a campaign that seeks to significantly improve the lives of men with prostate cancer, as well as the experience of their partners, carers and family members.

If you would like to make a donation to this worthy charity, then David’s Movember number is 13493973.
