Vocational training helps Stuart Singleton get his Class 1 LGV Licence

What do you do when you’re disillusioned with your job? How do you start afresh and embark on a new career? Those were the questions facing Stuart Singleton. A mechanical engineer by trade, Stuart had reached a point in his life where he needed a new challenge. He wanted to work in the logistics industry, but didn’t know how to go about achieving that dream: that is, until he had a conversation with Job Centre staff who told him about how vocational training through a DWP-funded scheme could help him get his Class 1 LGV licence. With help and advice from the staff at the Job Centre, Stuart approached TTA, and the rest, as they say, is history. Here’s Stuart’s story:

Before you re-trained to be LGV driver what did you do?

“I was a qualified mechanical engineer, but my last job was as an inside quotations engineer. I started to get a little disillusioned with that so started to look for funding to retrain. I wanted a new challenge and I wanted to do something completely different. I was told by the staff at the Job Centre that because there was a shortage of LGV drivers, there was DWP funding available for training. That sounded like just the sort of thing I was after, so I applied. After going through several interviews and meetings with the Job Centre I was chosen to go on the scheme. Shortly after that I started my training at TTA.”

How long did the LGV training take and what did it involve?

“I started in May and eventually got my licence in mid-August. Before I started my training I had to have a medical and then wait about 3 weeks for the Class 2 provisional entitlement to be added to my licence. Then I had to complete the Goods Vehicle theory test before I could proceed with the practical training. The actual practical training itself started at the end of June.”

How did you find the training?

“It was great. The course was excellent and the training staff at TTA were brilliant. What I liked was that you weren’t treated as a customer: you were treated as an investment. Everyone was genuinely interested in how you were getting on and everyone did their level best to help you achieve your goals. I can’t give a testimonial for any other logistics training company as I don’t know what they’re like or what they do, but my experience of TTA was simply excellent.  I can definitely recommend them to others who are thinking of following a similar path.”

What are you doing now you’ve qualified as a Class 1 LGV driver?

“I’m working now as a result of the scheme. It’s not easy to get a job when you first qualify as you don’t have the necessary experience that companies are looking for. So many newly qualified drivers have to opt for agency work. However, I was fortunate because as part of the funding arrangement for the training course, the DWP gets a commitment from companies to offer jobs to newly qualified drivers, and I benefitted from that. I’m now employed with an agency working for a major supermarket chain based at Leyland. Hopefully when I’ve got the necessary experience in around 6 months, I’ll get a permanent job with them.”
