Stuart Ogilvie successfully completes the 7 rounds of golf in 7 day Hounds for Heroes challenge

Transport Training Academy is delighted to announce that TTA associate, Stuart Ogilvie, has successfully completed the 7 rounds of golf in 7 day challenge, raising £1220 for his nominated charity, Hounds for Heroes.  Although Stuart understood that the challenge would be gruelling as it involved playing 7 rounds of golf in 7 days in 7 different European countries and travelling over 2,000 miles; what he could not have foreseen are the problems and challenges that beset him on his epic European journey.

You manged to successfully complete the 7 day/7 rounds challenge, but by all accounts the challenge didn’t pass without incident. What happened?

“Yes I managed to complete the challenge, but I can’t say it went quite as smoothly as I would’ve liked. I did the first event in Scotland and then drove down to Folkestone. The following morning I got the ferry to Belgium, and went and played a round of golf without incident. Unfortunately because I was driving I’d taken my wallet out of my back pocket and put it in the driver’s door. When I stopped to get some water from the car boot, the wallet must have fallen out of the car. I didn’t notice until I was 50 miles down the road. So I travelled back to the golf course, but couldn’t find it anywhere.”

“The problem was the wallet contained all my money and credit cards. Luckily I had some English currency, and David, TTA’s managing director, had given me the fuel card for emergencies, so at least I could get something to eat. I then drove on to Osnabruck in Germany. I’d spoken to the hotel and explained the situation, and was assured that although I no longer had a credit card with me it would be OK for my wife to pay using her card. Unfortunately by the time I arrived the reception has closed, so I had to spend the night in the car in the car park.”

“I played the golf round at Osnabruck, then spent over 4 hours trying to find somewhere that would exchange Pounds into Euros. That money would have just about got me back home, but I needed more, so I had to rely on my wife transferring some money over to me. After lots of messing about and travelling from place to place, I finally managed to get a MoneyGram wire transfer in Breda, a 100 miles away from Arnhem where I was due to play the next round of golf.”

“I then travelled to France for the next round and successfully completed that, but when I reached the ferry port I found the crossing had been delayed. Eventually I managed to get home around 11 o’clock on Friday night. On the Saturday morning and went and played the English golf round and finished off the challenge on Sunday when I played my final round in Wales.”

What are your thoughts on your experiences during the challenge?

“Well, it wasn’t what I was expecting, but you have to expect the unexpected I guess. What I had to put up with wasn’t hardship in my opinion: the people I was doing the Hound for Heroes challenge for are the ones who have to put up with real hardship; they’ve got missing limbs and are suffering from PTSD and mental health challenges, so as far as I’m concerned any inconvenience I had to put up with is neither here nor there.  What’s important is raising money for the charity, and I would like to thank all the people who have supported me and donated to this fantastic cause.”
