Lee Stewart’s daughter, Laura, to take part in September’s Tough Mudder event to raise money for the Crohn’s Society

This September Transport Training Academy and members of their families will be running and participating in a series of charity events. The first event we’d like to tell you about is Tough Mudder which will be held on September 11th in Staffordshire.

This tough, gruelling, team-oriented challenge tests your grit, mental-toughness and all-round physical abilities and is definitely not one for the faint hearted. That’s not enough to faze Laura Stewart though: she’s made of much sterner stuff. Laura, daughter of Lee Stewart, TTA’s Head of Teaching, Learning and Quality, will be taking part in the Tough Mudder event with a team of 5 other childhood friends to raise money for the Crohn’s Society.

What is Crohn’s disease? Well, Crohn’s is a long-term condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system. There’s currently no cure for Crohn’s disease, though the charity is funding research to search for potential cures. The aim of all current treatments is to stop the inflammatory process, relieve symptoms and avoid surgery wherever possible.

Why’s Laura putting herself through this ordeal? Well, simply because, as Lee Stewart explains, it’s a cause that’s very close to her heart:

Why’s Laura taking part in Tough Mudder?

“Our youngest child suffers from Level 1 Crohn’s Disease, so it’s something we have personal experience of. Laura’s looking to raise money for the Crohn’s Society. She’s entered the event with a team of 5 friends she’s known since childhood, and will take part in the race on September 11th in Staffordshire. She’s started her own Just Giving page on Facebook, and her aim is to raise around £500 for the charity, though if she can top that she’ll be very pleased indeed. She’s paid for her entry into the event, and the family is going down to cheer her on on the day.”

Is this her first event for Crohn’s or has she done something similar before?

“No, this is her first Tough Mudder Event, but her boyfriend did a full Ironman event in Bolton about a month ago to raise money for the same charity. I think he raised about £1,000 during his event, so he did very well. Laura knows she’s in for a tough ride on the day, but she’s determined to complete the event and hopefully raise a tidy sum on the day which we can add to the charity’s coffers.”

All the staff at TTA would like to wish Laura all the best and we know she’ll do herself and her family proud.
