TTA facilities used by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Services for Hazardous Substance

One of the key aims of Transport Training Academy is to support, embed and promote equality and diversity and safeguarding in all its training. We are also keen to support our emergency services, and offer help whenever we can. So we were delighted to work in partnership with White Watch/ W56 Atherton from Greater Manchester’s Fire and Rescue Service, and make our training facilities available for Hazardous Substance Training (Hazmat) late last month.tta pic

Speaking about the Hazmat training exercise, Dave Holden, Watch manager of W56 Atherton Watch said:

“I would just like to thank Dave [Coupe] and Transport Training Academy for allowing the fire fighters from Atherton to use their facility. As every incident we attend is unique being able to train at unfamiliar surroundings adds to the realism and effectiveness of the training. [As]Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC) are used extensively across the chemical industry, familiarisation with these containers is an advantage to every fire fighter prior to attending an incident involving dangerous chemicals.”

“On the 25th October crews from Atherton and Eccles attended Transport Training Academy to deal with a simulated leak of sulphuric acid from an IBC. Two fire fighters in gas-tight chemical protection suits were able to identify the chemical and isolate the leak with minimal substance contact. Further teams using environmental protection equipment contained the leaking chemical preventing it entering the drains. Cordons where set in place and an area for the decontamination of the crew’s breathing apparatus was set up.”

“The simulated incident was brought to a conclusion after the substance had been identified and the measures put in place deemed adequate to prevent further contamination of the environment.”
