Mike Newman sets new blind Guinness World Record driving a racing truck.

Transport Training Academy is delighted to announce that Mike Newman, and the Speed of Sight team, have successfully broken the world blind land speed record for truck driving. Mike broke the record driving a racing truck at 120.04 mph at Elvington Airfield on October 26th.

The 5.5 tonne racing truck he used belongs to Dave Jenkins of Jenkins Motorsport a member of BTRA (British Truck Racing Association). Dave Jenkins was introduced to Mike earlier this year by David Coupe, Managing Director at Transport Training Academy. All three men shared the belief that, given Mike’s previous achievements, anything is possible. So going in search of an eighth world record (7th Guinness World Record) was in many ways a no-brainer.

Mike had previously set records flying a plane, driving a motorbike at 89mph, driving a boat at 93mph and, most recently in 2014 at Elvington Airfield, driving a car at over 200mph. These are remarkable achievements in themselves and put Mike alongside Donald Campbell as the only other person to hold both land and water records in the same year. What makes these achievements even more remarkable is that Mike was born blind.

How did Mike achieve such a remarkable feat? Well, he may have been alone in the cab, but Mike also had expert driving instruction from the trainers at TTA and radio contact from Dave Jenkins who followed closely behind the truck in a pursue vehicle. Never the less, in spite of this ‘help’ his achievement should not be underestimated. Dave told the Yorkpress:

“It’s not to be underestimated, the complexity of the challenge. But it’s also so rewarding to achieve something that is so…ridiculous, in a way.”

All the team at TTA and are delighted to have played a part in this remarkable man’s latest achievement. TTA’s training supports, embeds and promotes equality, diversity and safeguarding, so it was only natural that we should want to help Mike achieve his goal. We salute Mike and the Speed of Sight team on his latest record. Here’s to many more records, though we’re not quite sure what’s left.
