Mike Newman: The Next Big Thing

TTA, the North West’s leading logistics training organisation, is passionate about equality. That’s why we actively promote equal opportunities for all and always endeavour to support, embed and promote diversity and safeguarding in all our training. We believe that if you have ambition, disability should never be a barrier. That’s why we’re delighted to bring you further news about Mike Newman and the Next Big Thing – the attempt to break the World Blind Land Speed record later this month in a racing truck.

Mike, a blind former banker and holder of 6 land speed records, will be attempting to break the World Blind Land Speed record for driving a truck at over 100 miles per hour he will be driving a 5.5 tonne 1150bph racing truck. The attempt will take place at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire on October 26th and everyone at Transport Training Academy wishes Mike well.

So what drives a man like Mike to push himself to the limits of endurance? Well, it’s the desire to make driving more accessible and achievable for people with a disability, and to raise funds for the Speed Of Sight Seeing Ability – a UK Charity which provides life-changing driving experiences to people with disabilities throughout the UK.

Mike is a five-time Guinness land speed record holder, and currently holds the world records for land and water speed. In August 2014 Mike also became the first blind driver to break the 200mph barrier; clocking an average 200.5mph and a top speed of 204mph in a 4.6 litre turbo-charged Nissan GT-R. He currently holds 6 land speed records, and with luck will take this tally to 7 when he attempts to break the blind racing truck record later this month.

All the staff at Transport Training Academy will be rooting for Mike and wish him well.
